addiction means....
What is an addiction?
Having an addiction means not having control over doing, taking or using something, until it becomes harmful. Commonly there are dependencies on alcohol or drugs, but you can become addicted to everything from gambling to chocolate. You can not control the manner and amount of use of any thing that you are addicted to, and can not do without it during the day.
Is addiction a habit?
Some people use substances regularly without any problem. Other people have detrimental effects both physically and psychologically as soon as their habit turns into an addiction. There is no single reason that explains why you develop a dependency. Dependencies from substances like alcohol, drugs or nicotine change the mode of perception, both mental and physical. Some people benefit from it and feel a strong need to repeat this experience. Eventually, dependence becomes a habit that can not be stopped because it is a regular part of life.
Dependence and tolerance
Being addicted to a substance usually means that the dependence can be located at a certain level of intensity. Not to have the substance from which it derives benefit (withdrawal) becomes less pleasant. The more you use, the greater the body's tolerance to this product, until it has a need to increase the dosage and how often you take to ensure the same effect.
Who is at risk of developing an addiction?
Children who grow up in homes where there is an abuse of alcohol or drugs may be more likely to develop an addiction. Unemployment, poverty and lack of education can trigger addictionsas can stress and professional or emotional pressure.
